Newcastle and Port Stephens
Fingal Bay Beach, Port Stephens
After you depart Sydney, you will drive on the M1 Motorway through the Australian native bush and reach the city of Newcastle within 2 hours.
This coastal gem is known for its beaches, surf culture, and historic landmarks.
Enjoy a walk along the Newcastle Memorial Walk, which provides breathtaking views of the coastline and the city. Afterwards, relax and have lunch at one of Newcastle’s cafes or restaurants with ocean views.
The real highlight, Port Stephens, is just 45 minutes from Newcastle. The hidden gem is known for its natural beauty and aquatic adventures.
Tomaree National Park
The best things to do in Port Stephens include exploring the sand dunes of Stockton Beach, taking dolphin-watching cruises, savouring delicious seafood meals, and staying in accommodation with stunning sea views. Additionally, we always love visiting and hiking in the Tomaree National Park.
In summer, you can take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Shoal Bay, Little Beach or Fingal Bay.
We recommend staying in Port Stephens for a minimum of 2 nights to allow time for a cruise, exploring the dunes, and visiting some of the beaches.
Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour, Australia
As you continue your drive to Gold Coast from Sydney, you’ll reach Coffs Harbour, a vibrant coastal city that is our favourite in New South Wales.
Thrill-seekers will love the Big Banana, known for its iconic banana photo opportunities and a fun park featuring a range of attractions.
One of our favourite things to do in Coffs Harbour is to dine at the jetty with sea views.
Also near the jetty, you will find the Harbourside markets held every Sunday by the beach.
Besides that, there’s an excellent walk from the jetty to Muttonbird Island offering spectacular sea views.
Ooh, and don’t forget the walks at Bonville Head Lookout for epic sea views and the one of the best whale watching spots in Australia.
Bonville Head Lookout, Coffs Harbour
However, if you’re up for a thrilling adventure, you must go on a whale-watching trip. It’s pretty cool to see those massive creatures close up.
Another must-see near Coffs Harbour is a drive through the banana plantations up to Sealy Lookout and the Forest Sky Pier. Here you can see panoramic views of Coffs Harbour, take rainforest walks, and go on a Coffs Treetops canopy adventure through the treetops with zip lines and hanging bridges.
There is also a cafe surrounded by lush Australian bush (hours are 9 am-3 pm Friday to Sunday, but may change in season).
If you’re looking for more adventure, consider taking a detour from Coffs Harbour to Dorrigo National Park. There, you can immerse yourself in breathtaking views of mountains, waterfalls, and lush rainforests. It is truly one of the best bush experiences in New South Wales.
We recommend staying a minimum of two nights in Coffs Harbour, to give you time to go on a whale watching trip, as well as a few outdoor adventures. However, to fit in all the above-mentioned experiences, you will need to stay at least three.

Byron Bay
Byron Bay
No NSW coastal road trip would be complete without a stop in Byron Bay to experience its stunning beaches and the iconic lighthouse.
This laid-back coastal town is a mecca for surfers and backpackers alike.
From sunrise yoga on the beach to kayaking with dolphins, Byron Bay has no shortage of highlights. Some of the top things to do include exploring the boutique shops and markets, swimming at Wategos Beach, snorkelling at Julian Rocks, and soaking up the vibrant arts and live music scene.
Byron Beach, Byron Bay
Take a surf lesson at one of the many surf schools or hike to the top of the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse for breathtaking ocean views. Be sure to look out for whales during migration season.
Spend a few hours walking along the beach, and at night, enjoy the lively atmosphere in one of the bustling cafes or restaurants, whatever cuisine you’re after, Byron Bay will have it!
Stay a minimum of one night, but if you love the beach vibe, consider staying for two, three or more and spend your days at the beach and your nights in one of the many bars offering live music.
Gold Coast
Gold Coast, Queensland
As you approach the end of your drive from Sydney to Gold Coast, you’ll arrive at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta at the NSW and Queensland borders. The coastal drive from here passes over 15 Gold Coast suburbs, known for their gorgeous beaches and lively nightlife.
Each beachside suburb offers its own unique ambience. One of the best parts is the dining options by the sea, often serving some of the best seafood in Australia, particularly in Broadbeach.
Besides dining and beaches, the Gold Coast is famous for its theme parks, including Dreamworld, Warner Bros. Movie World, and Wet’n’Wild.
Dreamworld, Gold Coast, Australia
You will also find many games and entertainment centres in Surfers Paradise. Famous for its nightlife and shopping, Surfers Paradise is a holiday mecca offering beaches, bars, clubs and restaurants.
Alternatively, head to Burleigh Heads for a quieter, more laid-back experience and stunning coastal walks in the national park.
Further, if you love nature trails, there are many national parks to visit, including heading out to the Gold Coast Hinterland for a true nature escape.
We recommend staying for a minimum of two nights and enjoying a resort hotel with sea views. But if you love cities, beaches, amusement parks, and nature, and want to experience a bit of everything, stay for at least a week!
Other Stops on the East Coast Australia Road Trip
Yamba, NSW, Australia
This post highlights our favourite stops along the route. However, it’s important not to overlook the many remarkable towns, beaches, and national parks along the East Coast of Australia.
Over the past 20 years, we have explored so many incredible places while driving from Sydney to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Here is a honorary mention of some of our other favourite Sydney to Gold Coast drive stopovers.
The Central Coast is just one hour from Sydney. It includes beachside suburbs with accommodations and dining options by the sea, along with various activities and walking paths. Our favourite towns in this area include Terrigal, Ettalong, and the famous The Entrance.
Continuing three hours north of Port Stephens, you’ll find Port Macquarie. This stunning coastal town is known for its sweeping ocean views, the Koala Hospital (currently closed), and Billabong Zoo, which offers diverse wildlife encounters. There’s also the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and Lighthouse Beach.
The drive from Port Macquarie is one of the most gorgeous drives in New South Wales. This coastal stretch has several fantastic national parks. If you enjoy camping, you’ll find many excellent campsites by the sea.
You will pass some charming beach towns, such as South West Rocks and Nambucca Heads, which offer some of the best beaches in the state.
After Coffs Harbour, many people rush to Byron Bay. However, this part of the drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast offers many hidden gems with fewer tourists.
Another favourite, that we visited recently for the first time in over a decade, Yamba is asmall beach town, 130km north of Coffs Harbour. The sea views are incredible, with sweeping beaches perfect for a walk or a swim. There’s fun things to do such as visiting the historic Yamba Lighthouse, taking a dip in the ocean pools, a delightful boat trip across the Clarence River to Iluka, or simply strolling along the marina to watch the fishing boats unload their daily catch of the famous Yamba prawns.
Sydney to Gold Coast Road Trip Planning
Before hitting the road, plan your trip thoroughly to ensure you get the most out of your journey.
Start by deciding how many days you have available for the trip, so you can plan your route and make the necessary accommodation bookings.
It’s also essential to consider the weather and traffic conditions, particularly during peak seasons.
Disclosure: Discover Cars provided a complimentary car rental voucher for this trip to experience their services. All opinions and words expressed here are our own.
For accommodation: We always use Booking.com because they offer the most extensive range of choices, and if your plans change, many places offer free cancellation.
For car rental: We find Discover Cars easy to use and love that they offer a wide variety of car choices from many car rental companies all on one website. This helps you save time by comparing websites, allowing you to sort cars by price and find the best deals available.
The best part is that you can choose to pay in advance or upon pickup.
On our most recent trip, we noticed they offered exclusive specials that other rental company websites did not provide and got a heavily reduced winter rate.
They also provide full insurance at a significantly discounted rate compared to traditional rental car agencies.
Activities: Whether you need to book a 4WD for the Stockton Dunes, go horse riding, kayaking, whale watching, or dolphin trips, you’ll find the most exciting activities for each town at GetYourGuide.
How Long Do You Need for the Sydney to Gold Coast Drive?
The Sydney to Gold Coast drive time is approximately 9 hours. If you’re short on time, you could complete the trip in two nights: one night stopover in Coffs Harbour (this town is halfway between Sydney and the Gold Coast), and a second night on the Gold Coast. However, this would do a disservice to your touring experience. An absolute minimum should be six nights.
If you have only six nights, you could stop at various destinations, but you would still be rushed, spending only one night in each location with just a few hours to see the highlights. Ideally, this trip should be spread out over 10 to 14 days to allow for a few nights in each destination.
We have travelled all over Australia and driven along all the major highways; the East Coast of Australia road trip is our favourite in the country.
We love this road trip so much that we do it at least two times a year, and sometimes more, and it’s just as exciting doing the drive from Gold Coast to Sydney by car.
The Sydney to Gold Coast drive is an adventure of a lifetime that promises unforgettable experiences. You can explore some of Australia’s most beautiful coastal towns, natural wonders, stunning beaches, historic landmarks, cultural experiences, and unique attractions along the way.
