It wouldn’t be a complete trip to Switzerland without a visit to Jungfraujoch, the “Top of Europe” – the highest railway station in Europe and the center of a UNESCO World Heritage Site where panoramic views of a wonderland of ice, snow and rock await the adventurous traveler.
On a Q&A with Mila Kickert, the North America representative from Jungfrau Railways, Mila shares her knowledge about this UNESCO World Heritage Site including its hidden gems, what she recommends visitors wear and what guests can expect at the “Top of Europe.”
Can you describe the moment visitors first step out at the Top of Europe?
Stepping out at Jungfraujoch, 11,332 feet above sea level, into the crisp, alpine air is both stunning and surreal. What lies before them are vast fields of ice, rugged peaks, and the majestic sweep of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in Europe.
It’s a moment that feels cinematic. Quiet. Immense. And for many, quite literally, breathtaking.
What does a visit to Jungfraujoch entail? What is there to do and see?
The journey to Jungfraujoch is as thrilling as the destination itself. Most visitors begin with the cutting-edge Eiger Express gondola, gliding effortlessly from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher. However, there are some that opt for the scenic train ride through the Lauterbrunnen Valley, arriving at Kleine Scheidegg to board the legendary Jungfrau Railway.
This historic cogwheel train – an engineering marvel since 1912 – ascends along steep alpine slopes to the “Top of Europe.” On the way, guests will enjoy photo stop at Eismeer (“Sea of Ice”) which offers them an up-close view of the glacier, setting the stage for what’s to come.
At the summit, the Discovery Tour guides guests through an array of experiences. They’ll begin with a stunning 360-degree cinematic overview, then rise even higher to the Sphinx Observatory (located 11,716 feet above sea level) for panoramic views that feel like you’re standing among the clouds.
Outside, step directly onto the glacier plateau for a photo op unlike any other. In summer, adrenaline seekers can try the zip line or snow tubing. Indoors, the Alpine Sensation exhibit traces the human history behind the Jungfrau Region and the extraordinary effort that brought the railway to life.
Carved deep into the glacier, the Ice Palace beckons with shimmering ice sculptures and walk-through tunnels. And when it’s time to warm up, Tauck guests can enjoy lunch or coffee in the restaurants and lounges on site. Don’t miss a visit to Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, the Kirchhofer watch boutique, or the Jungfrau souvenir shops – yes, the highest-altitude versions of their kind in the world.
Are there any lesser-known experiences or hidden gems at Jungfraujoch you recommend?
The Alpine Sensation is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the most poignant parts of the visit. It tells the story behind the mountain and the people who shaped it. When guided by one of the certified Jungfrau Railways experts (as Tauck guests always are), the history comes alive through murals, artifacts, and emotion. It’s an unexpectedly moving experience, and a beautiful contrast to the scenery outside.
What makes Jungfraujoch such a meaningful stop on a Tauck journey?
This is one of those rare places that lives up to every superlative. You’re standing at Europe’s highest railway station. You’re seeing the continent’s longest glacier. You’ve arrived via the most modern tricable gondola in the Alps. And yes, you can buy a Swiss watch or fine chocolate at the highest-altitude shops in the world.
But beyond the records and accolades, Jungfraujoch delivers something deeper: the feeling of being small in the best way possible. It’s a meaningful blend of nature, human ingenuity, and quiet wonder—all wrapped into one unforgettable moment. And it fits perfectly into a Tauck journey that celebrates not just where we go, but how deeply we experience each destination.
What is something most visitors are surprised by when they arrive?
Many are amazed by how much there is to do and how expansive the facility truly is. This isn’t just a scenic viewpoint. It’s an immersive mountaintop experience, complete with interactive exhibits, glacier access, restaurants, and shops. Guests often wish they had more time to take it all in.
If you could only do one thing, what would you say is a must?
Step onto the glacier plateau. Stand there. Breathe it in. Let the views of the Alps surround you. That’s the moment when “Top of Europe” stops being a phrase and becomes a feeling.
Is there anything our guests should know before heading up?
Yes! There are a few practical tips to ensure a comfortable visit. Even in summer, temperatures hover below freezing, so dressing in warm layers is key. Sunglasses are essential, snow glare is real. The high altitude can affect anyone, so take your time, stay hydrated, and consider bringing a small snack.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip. Snow and ice are part of the adventure. And remember: Tauck’s expert guides are there to support you every step of the way.
