Tourism’s economic impact
Hamburg is a prominent destination within Germany, attracting millions of visitors and contributing significantly to the local economy. According to Hamburg Tourismus, the city welcomes around 100-million-day visitors annually. These visitors generate approximately €4.1 billion in gross revenue each year, benefiting not only central tourist areas but also smaller businesses across the city. The majority, about 88%, of these visitors come for leisure activities, while 12% visit for business purposes, demonstrating Hamburg’s diverse appeal.
Growth in air travel
The city’s air travel infrastructure has also shown significant growth, as Hamburg Airport recorded 13.6 million travelers in 2023, an increase from 11.1 million in 2022, primarily driven by an increase in private travel. Although these figures have not yet returned to the 2019 peak of 17.3 million, Hamburg’s recovery rate positions it as one of the strongest among Germany’s non-hub airports, according to Hamburg Airport.
Rail and transportation
Hamburg’s rail connectivity is another key feature of its infrastructure. According to hamburg.com, the city has four main train stations—Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, Dammtor, Altona, and Harburg—along with a central long-distance bus terminal (ZOB). Hamburg Hauptbahnhof alone serves up to 450,000 passengers daily, making it one of the busiest railway stations in Germany. This network supports both regional and international travel, providing convenient transportation options for visitors and residents alike.
Tourism tax
For overnight visitors, Hamburg implements a culture and tourism tax based on the cost of accommodations, as noted by Hamburg Tourismus. This tax begins at €0.50 for room rates between €10.01 and €25 per night and increases incrementally, reaching €4 for rooms priced up to €200. For each additional €50 in room cost beyond that, the tax increases by €1. This tax contributes to funding services and infrastructure for both tourists and locals.
