Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has revealed major plans to transform Great Stirrup Cay, its private island in the Bahamas. With a $150 million investment, the company is upgrading key features of the destination—including the addition of a pier that will finally eliminate the need to tender guests ashore.
According to NCLH’s official press release, the new pier will accommodate two large ships at once, making the arrival process easier and more reliable, especially for ships in the Prima Class. This has been one of the most frequent complaints about the island, and the change is expected to make port days more efficient and enjoyable.

One of the standout additions is a large, centrally located pool—heated, no less—with swim-up bars, private cabanas, and separate areas designed for both families and adults. This new pool area is expected to become a key gathering spot for guests, especially those who want a relaxing alternative to the beach.
Also in the works is a new upscale, adults-only retreat located on the western end of the island. It will be exclusive to Haven guests on Norwegian, as well as suite guests sailing with Oceania and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. This new space will be separate from Silver Cove, which will continue to operate as part of the island’s premium offerings, including its private villas, lagoon area, and elevated dining. We stayed in one of the Silver Cove villas and found it a relaxing upgrade for a port day.
To make it easier for guests to get around, a tram system will be introduced with multiple stops across the island—including the new beach club, pool area, and arrival zone. New dining options, expanded shaded seating, and upgraded retail spaces are also part of the overhaul.
These updates are part of NCLH’s larger strategy to enhance guest experiences across its brands and keep its private island competitive with the growing list of upgraded cruise line destinations. Construction is expected to begin this summer, with most of the enhancements scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
