About Oosterpark
Oosterpark, Amsterdam’s first large public park designed by Dutch landscape architect Leonard Springer in 1891, offers visitors a tranquil green escape in the eastern district. This verdant 12-hectare space combines English landscape style with meandering paths around a serene central pond, attracting locals for picnics, jogging, and cultural events throughout the year. Beyond natural beauty, the park houses significant cultural landmarks including the National Slavery Monument commemorating the Netherlands’ abolition of slavery in 1863, and borders notable institutions like the Tropenmuseum. Biodiversity flourishes with old-growth trees, varied bird species, and even wild parakeets, while the annual Keti Koti Festival celebrating Surinamese freedom transforms the park into a vibrant cultural celebration each July. Less tourist-heavy than Vondelpark, Oosterpark offers visitors an authentic glimpse of Amsterdam daily life while providing space for reflection, recreation, and community gathering.
